Water, WORRY & ME
Currently residing in Gallery 6 at Ferens Art Gallery, I have been commissioned to create a decanted version of Water, Worry & Me.

In this series of work. I wanted to create a narrative of the hazy memory I had of the whole 2007 floods. But remembering vividly the anxiety and worry at the time, being nine years old. Travelling with family members in their cars. Having the memory of the water being up to the windows and not knowing on separate occasions, if both cars were going to get us home.
My sister’s experience of the floods were a huge influence in how I made the work, being one of the many people having to live in a caravan for a year. The conversations we had during the floods and the aftermath of the flooding created an incentive in how I wanted to demonstrate the extent of the damage that happen. Also the resilience, Hull has a city.
In using Acetate and threads, I wanted to provoke associative memory by using specific imagery, textures and colour.
Layering text, I wanted to use words and phrases intentionally described the impact of the floods at the time and how history can be determined to change the future.
I was influenced by the community writings from the Flow of words’ project as a source point in getting the perspective of people from Hull, on flooding. As well as I often used articles, videos and reports about the floods to acknowledge facts of the effect it had on the city. But also, to get first-hand understanding of people’s experiences who were severely impacted.
